Peer Comments: Project 1 Experience Enrichment

Jill Darbey

Video Reflection: Don Norman

Emotional Design

Don Norman talks about his book‘Emotional Design: Why We Love (or Hate) Everyday Things’. The subject revolves around how consumers are buying products because of its looks rather than its function.
Take for example Philippe Starck’s ‘Juicy Salif’, it is said to be a juice squeezer and looks unique and interesting, however, on the package of the product, it is instructed not to squeeze any juice as the acid would ruin the gold plate. Although most people would think this is an absurd design they do not realise that they themselves are not buying products that work best but rather look the best and is also interesting. It is our curiosity and fascination in the design that chooses the product in the end.

Emotional design has gradually grown to play a big role in the final product. Industrial designers therefore have to consider designing products that are more interesting and enhance the consumer’s experience of the product

Video Reflection: Annie Leonard

Major take home messages from the video would be that the money from the products that are sold, do not pay for everything that went into the process of making it, such as people who manufacture the goods are not getting paid enough in some countries. Although all we see is the buying and selling of goods, there is so much more to the process of getting a product to the buyer.

As the video is not so much about industrial design, but more the bigger picture, it suggests that our products that we design should strive towards being more environmentally friendly and avoid designing objects that are planned for obsolescence. We should influence the consumers to steer away from this want for products that are to be bought then disposed of, even if it is perfectly useful, by designing things that are timeless, and would be appreciated in many years to come. An example of bad design towards the environment are those juice packs mentioned in the video and how they are made of inseparable materials such as foil and paper or something all merged together, making it impossible to recycle. The part about obsolescence, both planned and perceived is also warning the viewer against consumerism, and constantly buying things unnecessarily.

My opinion about design has changed by giving me an insight into the bigger picture, and how the design of a product affects the world, and this linear cycle that we must develop to become a cyclic cycle. The problem with the cycle is that we are using up all our resources and destroying our planet. It shows why the whole design world is becoming more environmentally friendly.

Video Reflection: Ross Lovegrove

The video opened my eyes to new ways of thinking about design, from the world of micro (magnified images of cells integrated into design) to the idea of designing for the future with "fat-free" or "lean and efficient" products that satisfy the need without trying to look fancy but manage to be different.

Ross talks about moving towards new materials such as types of polymers that don't necessarily look good but work, which is his main aim. Its also interesting when he says "how can i design a phone in three weeks then i look at dinosaurs that evolved in millions of years". This is a very true message that emphasizes the idea of products adapting to new ideas and environments.

The video was an interesting insight into design through instinct to create products that behave like and almost imitate nature for a different and purposeful outcome.

Video reflection: Designing Dream Machine

This video gave me new insight in to what being and industrial designers really means. most of the past videos we have watched have been about designers practicing what i like to call "selfish design". for example, ross langrove and his stairs. This video, however, focused on teamwork and the process that industrial designers take to reach the final product. one of the eye opening things that i noticed was how much research and time was spent in investigating the product. its not all just about waiting for the perfect idea to hit you. As well as this, the designers have to work very closely with the client as well as each other as its not an individual that matters but the needs of the client and those the design is ultimately for. Going through this year and designing for myself has given me almost a false understanding of industrial design, but after watching this video some wrongs have been righted.

Project 3 : Upcycling Unwanteds "BUBTOP"

My product is called BubTop which targeted for artsy Uni Student who like to use unique stuff. This laptop sleeve is made out of cellophane gum container and ex-used pillow cover.
I chose this material because each material has its own unique features and quality.
  • Cellophane : has low permeability to liquid which give protection to the laptop. The plastic is also give extra protection when it hits something (it'll bounce back)
  • Pillow cover : It is soft, provide protection from scratch

Impact reduction:

  • The used of cellophane : made from regenerate cellulose which derived from plant that means it is 100% biodegradable.
  • Use less adhesive (more stitch)
  • Unique design; people who have something good and unique product will tend to keep their goods longer.
  • Use minimal material

Project 2: Postal Present

MODERN VICTORIAN
JEWELLERY HANGER

JEWELLERY HANGER

For this second project, i decided to make jewelery hanger which will i give to my bestfriend. That flowing and elegant form was inspired by victorian decorative and i made it in a modern way. So it can be called modern victorian jewelery hanger. I chose red as colour because red represent brave and strengh but on the other side it can be feminine and soft.
The material i used is acrylic because it stiff and strong and have a smooth surface. And for the cutting, I used laser cut because it's accurate and clean finish.

Task 6: Bad Design

I chose this tap for my bad design assignment because it caused a lot of problems. First, the length of the tap is short compare to its sink, so when the water runs out, it touches the edge of the sink and the water spill everywhere. It may cause our clothes and the floor wet. Second, the tap switch only on for more less 8 seconds thus we have to press it all over again while we wash our hand and it is an hygienic issue.
I think the best solution is just simply change the design of the tap into the longer one or change the overall design. And maybe change the switch using the sensor so we don't have to touch the tap while washing the hand.

PROJECT 1: EXPERIENCE ENRICHMENT

"PIPO" SNACK CRUSHER

This snack crusher is targeted for toothless elderly people and it is basically mortar and pestle. This tool might help elder people to enjoy the snacks they might missed tasting it. In making this snack crusher, so many things has influenced me. I was inspired by Javanese culture where elder people have to crush their food before eat. The types of food that can be crushed by this tool are peanuts, biscuits, and any other snacks.

"Pipo" snack crusher allows elder people to eat snacks by crushing it with the mortar. The plastic and rubber material produced a lightweight yet strong tool which make it portable. This tool also has a lid that prevent the snacks to fly everywhere while crushing it. I've chosen bright colour to boosten up appetite and this tool has been design in hand-held size. Another feature is the inner part of the pestle has rounded edge thus the mortar can reach every edge of the pestle and it also easy to wash.

YVES BEHAR:Creating objects that tell stories

In the video, Behar mentioned that most of his works are basically based or inspired by story, thus the object has meaning and something behind it. He also mentioned that he doesn't like to create something which just following the legacy that only being re-designed. He'd like to create something that change the entire human experience. He and his team create things from all the aspects;including the technology and the aesthetical aspect. An example of his work that combined technology and aesthetical aspect is the leaf lamp. It is an ordinary lamp but it allows the user to change the color of the bulb (yellow or white) just with one touch. His other remarkable work is 'XO' portable computer which affordable ($100) and easy to use by children. By designing and producing this laptop helps many children in the third world country to have new experience in their study.

Many things i've learnt from Behar's video, but the most inspiring is his effort to be a creator, not a follower. He encourage me to do so; try to make a new experience and not always following the legacy.

This lamp is low energy consumption.

Mushroom floor lamp
by SIMON DUFF
EATGREEN DESIGN EXHIBITION

From all objects in EatGreen design exhibition, this lamp attracked my attention because of its unique design and the way this lamp placed on the floor. This lamp is also has a good reflection when its on. It has been designed for low energy consumption and mady by plaster composite.

Chest of drawers
by:Droog Design
INSPIRED:design across time

This drawer interest me because of its composition and unique appearance. And I think Droog Design has the original concept reflecting Droog's interest in reusing familiar objects.

ZONTIK
by: Karim Rashid
FormFunctionFabulous

One thing popped in my mind when i first saw ZONTIK "that must be Karim Rashid's". From its unsual form and the used of light and playful colour as the characteristics of his design. I like Zontik the most among another collection because the shape is unusual for umbrella stand that make this umbrella stand is much more than an "umbrella stand".

PORCINI CANOPY
by:Jaquie Hagan and Madeleine Potter
LAUNCH PAD

This eco-friendly standing lamp interested me because it looks natural and feminine from its appearance. The material used represent designer's concerned about nature, non-endangered timber and 100% pure new wool upholstery, which is both biodegradable and renewable.

David Kelley's Video Reflection

The Future of Design is Human-Centred

David Kelley's talk on human centred design was certainly give me greater knowledge as it becomes easily perceived with each product he showed that promotes the incorporation of human elements into products. For Example, walls that changes colours like the sun as it moves across the sun and the cubicle with flowers that wilts as you leave which were design with its high impact in human emotions in mind. The spyfish is also interest me of having a new scuba diving experience without really gets into water perhaps due to disability or time limitation and thereby enriching their lives in the simplest possible way.

As a student, learning about the different philosophy of designers helps me to focus on developing my own understanding of what design is and where the future of design is leading towards.
