Project 2: Postal Present

MODERN VICTORIAN
JEWELLERY HANGER

JEWELLERY HANGER

For this second project, i decided to make jewelery hanger which will i give to my bestfriend. That flowing and elegant form was inspired by victorian decorative and i made it in a modern way. So it can be called modern victorian jewelery hanger. I chose red as colour because red represent brave and strengh but on the other side it can be feminine and soft.
The material i used is acrylic because it stiff and strong and have a smooth surface. And for the cutting, I used laser cut because it's accurate and clean finish.

Task 6: Bad Design

I chose this tap for my bad design assignment because it caused a lot of problems. First, the length of the tap is short compare to its sink, so when the water runs out, it touches the edge of the sink and the water spill everywhere. It may cause our clothes and the floor wet. Second, the tap switch only on for more less 8 seconds thus we have to press it all over again while we wash our hand and it is an hygienic issue.
I think the best solution is just simply change the design of the tap into the longer one or change the overall design. And maybe change the switch using the sensor so we don't have to touch the tap while washing the hand.

PROJECT 1: EXPERIENCE ENRICHMENT

"PIPO" SNACK CRUSHER

This snack crusher is targeted for toothless elderly people and it is basically mortar and pestle. This tool might help elder people to enjoy the snacks they might missed tasting it. In making this snack crusher, so many things has influenced me. I was inspired by Javanese culture where elder people have to crush their food before eat. The types of food that can be crushed by this tool are peanuts, biscuits, and any other snacks.

"Pipo" snack crusher allows elder people to eat snacks by crushing it with the mortar. The plastic and rubber material produced a lightweight yet strong tool which make it portable. This tool also has a lid that prevent the snacks to fly everywhere while crushing it. I've chosen bright colour to boosten up appetite and this tool has been design in hand-held size. Another feature is the inner part of the pestle has rounded edge thus the mortar can reach every edge of the pestle and it also easy to wash.

YVES BEHAR:Creating objects that tell stories

In the video, Behar mentioned that most of his works are basically based or inspired by story, thus the object has meaning and something behind it. He also mentioned that he doesn't like to create something which just following the legacy that only being re-designed. He'd like to create something that change the entire human experience. He and his team create things from all the aspects;including the technology and the aesthetical aspect. An example of his work that combined technology and aesthetical aspect is the leaf lamp. It is an ordinary lamp but it allows the user to change the color of the bulb (yellow or white) just with one touch. His other remarkable work is 'XO' portable computer which affordable ($100) and easy to use by children. By designing and producing this laptop helps many children in the third world country to have new experience in their study.

Many things i've learnt from Behar's video, but the most inspiring is his effort to be a creator, not a follower. He encourage me to do so; try to make a new experience and not always following the legacy.

ZONTIK

FormFunctionFabulous

One thing popped in my mind when i first saw ZONTIK "that must be Karim Rashid's". From its unsual form and the used of light and playful colour as the characteristics of his design. I like Zontik the most among another collection because the shape is unusual for umbrella stand that make this umbrella stand is much more than an "umbrella stand".

David Kelley's Video Reflection

The Future of Design is Human-Centred

David Kelley's talk on human centred design was certainly give me greater knowledge as it becomes easily perceived with each product he showed that promotes the incorporation of human elements into products. For Example, walls that changes colours like the sun as it moves across the sun and the cubicle with flowers that wilts as you leave which were design with its high impact in human emotions in mind. The spyfish is also interest me of having a new scuba diving experience without really gets into water perhaps due to disability or time limitation and thereby enriching their lives in the simplest possible way.

As a student, learning about the different philosophy of designers helps me to focus on developing my own understanding of what design is and where the future of design is leading towards.
